In 1975, 1747 billion kilowatt hours were produced and by 2017, the amount of kilowatt hours produced jumped to 3,820 billion. That’s an increase of 2073 billion kilowatt hours in the past 42 years. 2017 was the first year in 42 years there was a decline in use of kilowatt hours.

Why do you think this is?

In 2017, U.S. electricity sales fell by the greatest amount since the recession by 80 billion kilowatt hours. The electrical companies will say the 2% decrease reflects the lower retail sales in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors and is largely attributed to milder weather. What milder weather?! I know here in California I did not experience this “milder weather” they speak of.

Now if you take the time and do the research, you will see that solar energy installations in 2017 topped gas, coal, and nuclear combined, amid steady growth in renewables. Interesting isn’t it?

Data released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and a joint report by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) and the Frankfurt School’s UNEP Collaborating Centre (FS-UNEP-CC), show renewable energy generation capacity grew by 8.3% in 2017, similar to the average annual growth rate in previous years. Growth in solar capacity alone exceeded the combined new capacity installations of coal, gas and nuclear power.
